The AQN has programme approval for the following generic unit standards. The different licensed assessors may not be able to offer all of these, but check their individual pages to see what they can offer:

If you are guiding a discipline that does NOT have a registered elective (speciality), then to comply with the Tourism Act you just need to hold the appropriate unit standards below and prove your subject matter expertise thorough some other means. e.g. Surf instructors award, Professional hunters ticket etc.

It is not necessary to hold a full national qualification certificate. Only the mini skills program is an absolute necessity to register as a guide.

Level 2 (Only for learners who do not already hold at least a Grade 12 school certificate)

  • 8478 Create a guided experience for customers

Level 4 (For learners who  already hold at least a Grade 12 school certificate)

  • 8531 Conduct a guided experience with customers

  • 8532 Design a guided experience for customers

  • 8533 Interpret guiding for tourists

Learners without grade 12 can also do level 4 is they so wish.
